Inmates in a classroom

Steered Straight Builds Municipal Alliances

Michael Shares His Story of Hope with Inmates and Gains Sheriff Support for  School Assemblies

Many of the assemblies that are brought to schools are funded by the support of the local law enforcement.   These municipal alliances sometimes arise from school district recommendations.  Sheriff offices have learned of Steered Straight’s drug prevention initiatives and have incidentally invited Michael to speak to the jail recovery population as well.   It’s so encouraging when cooperation between Steered Straight and local law enforcements grows from our student drug prevention efforts to include adult recovery interventions. These instances bring our drug retaliation initiative full circle.

Now that summer break has begun, school staff and guidance departments are reminded to keep their law-enforcement in mind for support. Summer months are a good time for schools to forge these alliances for the up and coming school year. We encourage school staff to contact law enforcement offices and municipal alliances to see if there is any funding available for drug-prevention initiatives.

Steered Straight is here to guide should you need any assistance originating an agreement.  We have new skits for 2017/2018 that we are eager to share with your students.  Give us a call to hear about our new assemblies and the new Back to the Classroom teacher resources that are included with each assembly.

Discussion Forum

July’s Discussion Question:
Drug prevention is not only about drug education and drug resistance.  It may also require us to find ways promote purpose.  It is time to challenge the customary programs to stop focusing on drug information and become more socially focused.  It is time to challenge each state’s Core Curriculum Standard on drug education to do the same.  Moreover, it is time to figure new ways to give our youth meaningful, social roles that compete with the opportunities available to them in the street. What are some meaningful roles we can offer our youth to compete with the pseudo social roles offered by gangs and drug cartels?
